When people take pictures of their cars

Do they do it in such a way so that the car appears bigger than it really is?

I've noticed that when looking at pictures of m3s in comparison to their background, the car looks a lot bigger than it really is in real life

That may be a product of them using a wide angle lens. In this example, it distorts the outer part of the picture in a way that puts a lot of focus on the center.

Those pictures are shot, not using a wide angle lens, but a zoom lens. They are standing really far away from the car say, about 100 ft away and are zoomed in at 200 or 300 mm. That creates the larger than life effect.

uh.. because you want a picture of the car, not the background

the same could be asked, why pdoeople appear larger/smaller in pictures..

unless you have 'car envy' and want your car to look bigger or smaller than it actual is

this question is silly actually

I only asked because for an uninformed person, the pictures of the car could be misleading to the actual size.

Car photography

Medium-range telephoto shots to me give the car better proportions than wide angle shots, and will tend to make the backgrounds relatively large. Wide angle has its place, but it can unnaturally distort. My signature shot here was shot at 90mm digital/135mm 35-mm equivalent, and I think its a good proportion.

Oh, sorry.. i thought you were asking from a epistemological perspective, as in "How can things appear smaller than they are?".. my answer, they can't, there is something wrong with the viewer
The photography guys have your answer..

250mm zoom. From the other side of BMW Welt. Looks normal to me.

The other thing to consider is that digital adds 10 pounds.
