6MT Vs DCT
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I was just wondering if any hardcore manual drivers (like me), have got withdrawals after opting for DCT this time around on a 135i?
My old 135i cab had the performance range shortshift set up and it was phenominal, but the mrs travels into the city and we have been toying with a DCT in the family (as well as her stick Mini) so on heavy traffic days on the DVP she will borrow mine. I just dont want to get DCT and be kicking myself at the loss of the third pedal....... What have you guys and gals gone through?? |

I went from always having a manual to having a DCT in my GT-R. It was a pretty rough transition, I won't sugar coat that! Now I have a DCT in the 135. I like the DCT, but I don't love it. It gets the job done, but I still prefer a proper manual tranny. You need to have a really good reason to give up the third pedal, in my mind.

I bought a DCT after only owning manuals for 15+ years. Even after driving manual all that time I won't claim I was ever really good at it though. Some days I really miss the manual and even find myself reaching for the shifter unintentionally but on days where I am in rush hour, in bad weather or if I have passengers it is nice to just pop it in drive and cruise along. I do drive the DCT in manual most the time when the roads are dry and I am alone in the car and I will admit it isn't quite the same as the connected feeling of a nice 6MT.
Overall I would take the DCT if given the option again though, I know it shifts faster then I ever could, its easy to drive if you just want to take it easy yet still has the performance of a 6MT when you want it. Only negative I can think of is I read a bit about the DCT potentially slipping with the extra torque from a tune, I would imagine that is something that will get worked around though if it hasn't been already. |
