Anybody know what these are?
I just had a blown tire replaced at my dealer. I don't know if they have replaced my rim because I have tire insurance. Anyways, I never notice these things on my wheel before, and I was wondering what they are for. They are attached pretty firmly on the wheel so I don't know if I can/should remove them.

They're lead weights, just about every wheel in the world has them. If you look on the inside of the wheel you'll see them there as well.

Yep, wheel weights for balancing. Wheels that contain TPMS sensors will have more than those without the sensors, as the weights are placed directly across from the sensors to counter-act the sensor's weight. However, 99% of wheels out there will have weights somewhere on them.
Yours are oddly placed close to the outside face of the wheel though, not a good job as Lester said. |

Ditto - weights should not be so far forward.

OP - those are wheel weights. Perfectly fine.
There are two ways to place the wheel weights. one on the inside and outside of the wheel - like yours. Or only one place axis - those don't show as much but don't really provide for a dynamic ballance. Also... the reason why you are seeing more weights now... can be to the TPMS or new tire (what brand? off brand maybe?) or it can even be that most shops can't get lead wheel weights anymore... and are going to plastic! Yup!. Q)? do your wheels vibrate now? Or the steering wheel? IF no... your shop did a good job. IF all those weights bother you... you could take it back and have them hide them some what. Dackel |

Last time I asked the shop balancing my wheels if I could watch. They said some shops take the shortcut of only placing weights along the center of the wheel, but the "correct" way to balance the wheel involves placing weights along the inside and along the outside. That's not to say that every wheel will need weights added on the inside and the outside, but the balancing procedure might include it.
Their machine told them how much weight to add (and where to add it). They kept iterating until the machine spun and it came back within some threshold. If the look bothers you (those plastic weights look funny to me), have them redone, but it seems to me like they did a thorough job. Thanks for the post, next time I'll be sure to confirm that they use lead weights.

Prolly put them on the outside cause its easier to get to and most people wont care.
When i take my wheels to get mounted/balanced im going to specifically ask they put the weights on the inside. |

apparently.
Well... let's see... read posts 10 and/or 17. he "prolly" put them on the outside cause that's the correct place to put them. it is in no way easier to get to when performing this procedure. Last edited by fourtailpipes; 07-14-2011 at 01:13 PM.. |
