Is insurance really higher on red cars?

About to pull the trigger on a red 08 M3 and curious if that's true or is it a myth?

And don't flame me for not searching I'm on the iPhone app and lazy.

i never understood why insurance would be higher based on a color. it does not make u more prone to accidents (unless there's a bunch of bulls running around the streets lol). it only makes the car more prone to tickets and thats no reason to raise the premium before the actual ticket.

Because a specific color like color Red, Black and Yellow, were associated with racing. Thus if you like color Red, then your personality states; you like to show off, drive fast and break road laws.

Ferrari was the first to use Red on all their cars, thus this mentality of going fast and racing got robbed of on a lot of people, so insurance would raise their prices even if you drove a Red Geo Metro.

Car Insurance Urban Legends

For most of its history, the car insurance industry was shrouded in secrecy. Now with the internet and sites like carinsurancerates.com, information is more widely available and customers are better educated. But some car insurance myths still persist.

Urban Legend #1 - The Red Car Myth

Studies have shown that red cars are involved in more accidents than their blue, green, or gold counterparts, and it is a fact that, on average, drivers of red cars pay higher car insurance rates. But it's also a fact that car insurance companies do not take a car's paint color into account when determining premiums. How can both statements be true?

Well, it isn't the color of the car that matters, but the driver of the car. Some people are perfectly safe drivers of perfectly safe red cars. These people pay low car insurance rates. Others are perfectly safe drivers of not-so-perfectly safe red sports cars. They pay the same car insurance rates as equally safe drivers of blue or gold sports cars. Then, of course, there are the not-so-perfectly safe drivers of red sports cars - these people pay the highest rates.

The issue isn't the color of the car, it's the type of car (a greater percentage of sports cars are red than any other color), and the type of driver (aggressive drivers are more likely to prefer red). So it's true that if you compared the car insurance rates of every red car driver and every blue car driver, the red car drivers would be paying more. But it's also true that if you wanted to drive either a red or a blue car, the cost of insuring them would be the same.

Love the color red, love it on a lot of cars, but won't do it again because of speeding tickets.

I have a Red E92 Coupe and my insurance is very reasonable. I asked my insurance company the same thing and they said it was just a myth. The did say though that typically people who buy red cars are more aggressive and therefore have more tickets which in turn means higher rates. But the color itself has nothing to do with your insurance premiums.

I also think the statement that red cars get more tickets is a myth. If you are driving the speed-limit and obeying the rules then you wont get pulled over no matter what color your car is. I used to drive 20mph over the limit in my black 335 and I used to get pulled over all the time! But now I only do 5-9 over the limit (most of the time ;-) in my red M3 and I have only been pulled over once.
