Shift Light?

Has anybody installed a shift light in there 6mt? I would love to see pictures to maybe get an idea that I haven't thought of. Not talking about the lights on the tach that DCT car have just some kind of shift light. I know about the LED Performance Wheel but I don't want all that.

I have a DCT with shiftlights, and to be honest I rely completely on them when I'm on WOT on 1st or 2nd gear or if I push the kick down button and downshift few gears. the reason is the Tach needle is slower in those cases and unreliable (meaning it will be 6000 but I think the real RPM is more like 7500) and on those cases you'll see the shiftlights getting red while needle is still on 6K. I guess what I'm trying to say is be careful finding the right software. It has to be linked to the actual RPM not the needle. It's easy ans WRONG to come up with a solution whereby the lights are linked to the needle. Hope that makes sense to you.

My plan was to get a Cluster from a DCT and gut it.. then take the SHIFT light from the DCT and replace the 6MT with that... but im having hard time finding one even at junk yard... well i havent really look much but you get the IDEA... i think its cool to have the DCT SHIFT light... so once i get a hold of a DCT cluster ill do this mod.

Why didn't we get a shift light with th MT? Seems to make more sense for us than the DCT. I wanted to install a stand alone shift light but I'm not so good with wiring in cars. We need a DIY.

That's the beauty of 6MT. We get to do EVERYTHING ourselves.

The JB4 for the N54's has a feature where you can set the shift lights at a certain RPM and the blinkers on the dash act as the actual shift lights. I really like this feature and if someone produced a P&P version for our cars I'd buy it.

An aftermarket shift light could be easily incoporated as there is a tach signal (pulse output) from the DME in the diagnostic connector. I've toyed with the idea of a buzzer.

Who says? And do you have the pin out? My idea was to buy an MSD or VDO etc shift light, gut it and build a nicer housing or possibly install it in and HVAC vent.

I guess BMW assumed that us, MT drivers, know how to drive.. No need for lights to show us when to shift..

I'm just saying it would be nice not to have to take that split second to look down as you're approaching redline (particularly in 3rd gear cause you are well over the limit at that point).

I put a scope on it some time ago and the frequency traced with RPM.

It should be the bottom right pin on the OBDII connector and is a square wave signal (5VDC or 12 VDC, I don't recall which but will confirm in a day or two).

Yes, you're right. One just needs to look at F1 cars, WRC cars, Le Mans cars and so on to understand that top notch drivers do not need shift lights, they know exactly when to shift without those silly things blinking in the dashboard...

Sorry, what was that? Really? All those cars do have shift lights?! And those drivers rely heavily on them to know the best timing to shift? Oh, and none of those cars have MT? What about the Veyron? Same. And Ferrari 458? Really? And the new Maclaren MP4? Lexus ISF? Ok, I am running out of arguments. 6MT crowd, please send some reinforcements!

If I can get confirmation for a tach signal that easily tapable (is that a word?) I will design a nice cheap effective shift light for us

An evolve tune can get the 6MT fellas shift lights. Evolve has done the same for the E46 M's as well.

I think this is the reason why BMW came out with this... although it does look very pretty id rather have it intergrated it to our cluster...
