Why no beep when shifting into reverse gear ?

Just wondering why there's no beep when shifting into reverse gear on the 1M. Got used to that on my previous ///M. M5 also features a beep.

The 1er manual does not mention anything about it (page 65: chapter "Manual gearbox" - section "Reverse": "Engage this only while the car is standing still. When the gear lever is pressed to the left, a slight resistance has to be overcome"). Browsing through settings was also fruitless.

Possible to program it at the dealership ?

I was thinking the same actually when reading your post. Has anyone programmed this, because I thought I saw an option to program it?

Rear PDC not an option on 1M .... that would be the only thing that gave you a "beep" ???????

None of my M3's(1 SMGIII, and 2 Manuals) or my Z4 M Coupe(6MT) had this. The only one with NAV was the Mcoupe aw well if that makes a difference. The SMGII with PDC would beep but only if anything was close enough as a warning but not a "you're in reverse" indicator beep.

IDK I'm seeing it in the program guides for the M3/M5's (I'm talking about the code programming guides/translations). Have you tried programming this before? Maybe it's "off" by default?

Truthfully, I don't even know what that code means either. It's kind of general.

The MSRP would have been $5 USD more, thus no beep.

My M3 SMGII (2003) definitely made a "you're in reverse" beep as soon as the gear was shifted into reverse and the dashboard info display featured at the same time the "R". NAV-screen equally switched to the rear camera (full rear view in color) and PDC started doing its beeping job depending on the distance of objects behind. Maybe it was the rear camera that triggered the "you're in reverse" beep ? The camera was an option that was later retrofitted by BMW, at a high price, because not available yet back in 2003 (it featured a button on the right hand side of the steering column to switch between front view [split screen left hand front + right hand front] and rear view [full screen] - camera eyes were discreetly fitted in the front and rear end; even without reverse gear, you could operate the front camera by simply touching the button, for operating the rear view, reverse gear was required; once the car moved faster, the NAV-screen switched back to normal).

Anyway, a "you're in reverse" beep would be a small practical feature. If ever an occassional driver wishes to put the 1M into reverse, (s)he'd better not end up unexpectedly jumping forward. If the NAV-screen does not switch to the grey PDC screen, you're in first gear. Of course, I am perfectly aware that mistaking reverse gear with first gear due to distraction never happened to anyone of us...

No beep on my 6spd 135i, wouldn't see why they would put it on the 1M. Why would you want a beep anyways? The resistance you have to overcome isn't enough to tell you that you're going for the reverse gear?

My SMGII(notIIII, typo) did not have NAV, but had rear PDC. You are probably right, I think it has to be cars with PDC, NAV and automated trannys, maybe.

Sorry, we're from Europe, thus imperfect and unfortunately allow occassional drivers (GF, wife, etc.) to also drive our cars. Actually, over here we still don't get it why BMW failed to equip the Euro version 1M with a a big head-up display indicating "Beware: the pedal on the left is called «clutch» and supposed to be used before shifting."

I'm surprised they skipped that as well, considering the importance you place on a beep while engaging reverse!

Was gonna say, I definitely saw something for the M5's in the coding forum. I found out further that my statement above (code RUECKFAHRGONG) will enable/disable the beeping for PDC. Sorry, no luck for ya! I'm trying to see if there's another code, but I'm doubtful.

I'm kind of confused here? You want the car to beep at your more? I want to get ride of all the beeping, why do you need to know your in reverse....if you don't know your in reverse or how to backup I really think some driving lessons are needed!

Is there something different about //M's that makes this needed that I don't know about?
