How to tell which engine I have? (n54 or n55)

I have a 2011 135i with build date pre 09/10. Is there an easy way to tell if i have n54 or n55, or is it as simple as anything 2011+ is n55?

Yah. If it says TWINPOWER on top then it's an N55.

Isn't that odd?
I thought the N55 has a single turbo.
Shouldn't TWINPOWER be more appropriately inscribed on an N54?

TWINPOWER is referring to the Twin Scroll Single Turbo.

If your build date is after April 2010, then it will be a N55.

Actually BMW first started making N55's way back in Sept, 2009 prodtion. Not many, but they made some along side N54 production. So just going by build date is not certain you get one engine over the other.

BMW started making "some" N55's along side of normal N54 production for these production months:

Sept - 2009
Oct - 2009
Nov - 2009
Feb - 2010

starting from March -2010 all cars were N55 drivetrains.

Probably the best way to tell without looking under the hood... is IF it has a DCT it is an N55. IF its an auto it is an N54. IF its a 6MT... you'll have to look under the hood. See photos posted above to tell which engine is which.

And... to answer the OP's original question about his Sept - 2010 build date.. yes your engine is a N55.
