Frank discussion on future values $$
Hey Guys,
Since we all know how rare our cars are and we all know that they demand a premium price over sticker. What does the future hold? 5 years, 10, 20. Is this car going to go the same route as the Z8? . Or will it go the route of the 850 . For me it's been the car I've been waiting for. When they first came out with the 1 series I thought to myself. "Imagine if they came out with a M variant, Now that would be the best!" This is my first M. After an old (76 2002 sold ) and my now currant DD 04 325xit. It's like the next logical step in my bmw quest. So what do you guys think? Future values? Susi -- Last edited by 1M SUSI; 01-14-2012 at 07:04 AM.. |

I would think that it will hold its value well, but should not be viewed as an investment of any sort

Wow struck a chord there...no I dont own a 1M, but the 1er community has been having hypothetical talks like this since 2007, that includes 1M owners, ive seen several threads on it in the past year.
Dont get mad, just do a forum search before you post, see if there is already an active discussion on it. Am I beneath you because I drive a 2008 135 vert? |

I wouldn't mess with that guy. He types really tough.
I think the 1m should fair far better than the 850. If you remember, it honestely wasn't that great of a car even when it came out. It was beautiful but that was about all it -really- had going for it. The power wasn't that impressive and the handling wasn't either. It definitely never lit up the car mags for the same reasons the 1m does. I doubt it will fair as well at the z8 though. That car was hand built and the starting point was so high that it automatically puts it into more of a collectors realm. But the 1m is extremely limited here in the states. Not much more so than the s54 e36/8 mcoupe but that car has a body that not a lot of people like. The 1m body isn't liked by all but I would say the vast majority of car people think it looks fantastic. Combine that with extremely limited production and pretty amazing driving characteristics and you've def. got a potential collectors piece. |

to the OP even if you had found those previously started threads they are not as accurate as this one can become due to the fact we now have concrete numbers as to how many 1M's there actually are. so good job starting this my thoughts are it isnt going to stray much from the MSRP. 10 years from now I can still see a 1M in great condition with low miles being worth ~55k. Maybe i am wrong but thats how I see it. |

The 1M probably has more positive press and is more unique. The fact that it's 4 seats probably hurts values long term a little, and it doesn't have the same advantage over the lesser models as the S54, but I'd guess it should do as well as the S54 M coupes or better. So 40-50k in 10 years would be my wag, if you didn't drive it. If you do drive it subtract 10K and add 10 years of smiles...

IMHO the 1M will follow the path of the BMW E46 M3 CSL: low production (1400 cars), limited in time (MY2004), powerful special version, only two colors (SGM + BSM), special 19" BBS rims, etc.: these hold well their value.
Even the controversial BMW Z1 is still doing well in resale: "The first example of the Z1 was released by BMW to the press in 1986 and later officially presented at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. Initial demand was so fierce that BMW had 5,000 orders before production began. However, demand dropped significantly around 1988 and BMW ended production in 1991. There is speculation that the drop in demand was due to the early inflated demand from speculative investors. In 1988, however, BMW was quoted as saying that they had 35,000 orders for the Z1. [...] BMW only produced 8,000 Z1 models. [...] New Z1 vehicles sold new for 83,000 to 89,000 DM or between €42,000 and €45,500. As of 2001, used BMW Z1 vehicles were selling for between FF125,000 and 250,000 (between €19,000 and €38,000) in France including a 19.6% VAT. One example fetched just over £20,000 at Bonham's 2004 Olympia auction. In 2006, cars could be bought in France for a price between €25,000 and €30,000 the upper being reach for cars in perfect condition with low mileage." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Z1) |

Just remember that even if the car is worth ~$55k (which is MSRP-ish) in 10 years, in the year 2022 that amount is going to feel more like what $30k does today...

However, IMHO the joy of owning/using an exciting car experienced during all those years + the added driving and motoring know-how and experience you get, has its value too (hard to quantify, for enthusiasts it's even priceless). If you need a car anyway, then why not indulge yourself by getting a car which will repeatedly put smiles on many faces (including yours)? If, finance-wise, the car takes a hit over the years, then so be it; the fun you had with it might be treasured and cherished in your mind forever. If you like it and it does not compromise the family budget, other desiderata and family plans, then why not? After the wedding, you can either enjoy with your beloved a very fine honeymoon which you will always fondly remember, or simply stay at home to save and re-invest money. Okay, might sound quite hedonistic or even selfish, but, then again, you only live once - some even don't. |

BrokenVert has a serious inferiority complex. He gets ragged on in the regular 1er forums because he drives a Vert and now he comes to the 1M section and gets it even worse. Thats what happens when you get made fun of for almost 4 years. He just cant help it. Im not sure, but I think he may even have an automatic tranny in the convertible....

Pretty sure they are going to hold there value, hell I could make $10k by just have ordered one.
Walked into my dealership today to do the paper work, one of the SA's tells me he has a client that will pay me $10k for the right to by it. It was somewhat tempting and get a Cayman S but not quite enough. |
