Best 135i exhaust for a daily.
I'm trying to find the best exhaust for a 135i that will not drone while cruising at highway speeds, but will put a smile across my face when gunning it.. Any suggestions?
Being lightweight is a plus also! |

Most, if not all aftermarket exhausts will drone cruising at highway speeds. It all depends on how much drone you can tolerate as well as which transmission you have (AT will be more drone pronounced than MT).

I really like my set up of Berk Mid pipes with the stock muffler. No drone at all (AT), gurgles nicely on throttle release, and has a nice exotic sound on acceleration.
I know drone, had it bad on my 335 with cat-back. |

It's a fine balancing act on these cars and any exhaust you can really hear will drone. Swapping the mids(berk, maddad or the mids from the N55) or going with the BMW Performance Exhaust is probably your best bet.

A couple of days into my Performance Exhaust and I'm very pleasantly surprised at how it sounds. Nice volume and howl when you're on it, great little burbles when you shut off, and pretty quiet cruising on the freeway. My morning commute has a long steady grade and I intentionally lugged it a bit this morning and tried different rev's to see if I could get any drone, and at it's "worst" I could barely hear it with windows up and stereo off. Really wouldn't even consider it drone.
But if there are weight savings with this system, couldn't be much. The muffler weighs a bunch and the midpipe section is only slightly lighter. It's heavy duty tubing and you can feel it when you lift it.

N55 Mids and leave the axle back alone. Saves a good bit of weight and still reamins OEM. You are not going to gain any performance with these parts anyway so save your money.

BMW performance exhaust is incredible when you want it to be, and has very minimal drone on the highway

That's not always the case. I have seen some very expensive exhausts that produced really good power and were very quiet. There was an exhaust for the EVO VIII that was quieter than stock and produced almost as much power as the other brands being sold at the time. But it had alot of resonators and beleive parts of it may have been titanium to make up for the weight. I believe it was over $2K for it though.

"very minimal" = non-existent IMHO. I've always had stock exhausts on my previous BMWs, but I've ridden in enough BMWs with aftermarket exhausts to know what I didn't want (track car OK, but not for a daily driver). I was a bit apprehensive about the Performance Exhaust, but was absolutely thrilled with the sound and the non-intrusiveness of it. Ryan sums it up best: "incredible when you want it to be". |
