Berk Exhaust Issue on e88 Convert
Last week I had ModBargins in Los Angeles install ( based on their recommendation) an axle-back Berk street exhaust on my '08 e88 135i convert. Exhaust is really a work of art ..the welds are perfect and the stainless is polished nicely. However, there is a problem; looking under the car this morning I noticed that they did not reinstall the reinforcement braces that go from the middle of the chassis to the rear and it appears to me that these braces wouldn't clear the new exhaust anyway which is why they did not reinstall these. I am a little ticked because they never said a word to me about this. I have since called them and they are checking it out and will get back to me.
Also, I directly called Berk Exhaust and spoke to one of their engineers..he told me that they only make an exhaust for the coupe because the convert has these additional braces and the exhaust won't clear. He does not think this is a problem with not having these braces because BMW overbuilds everything but I am not convinced. Has anyone installed tho exhaust on their convert ? and do you think I should be concerned ? |

I've got the Berk cat back on my e88 vert, and it indeed rubs against the rear lower chassis reinforcement brace. The exhaust still installs fine but rests up against the brace, and rattles especially on cold start up.
I had my local shop put a few washers as a spacer where the brace bolts up to the chassis just to give that extra cm of clearance, and it is sweet chops now. |

Having just installed the PE on my 'vert, I did have to lower those braces to get the old catback out and the new one in. But they did bolt back up just fine. I could easily see some spacers solving your problem and as long as the bolts are long enough, not compromising strength. But running without those wouldn't be good. They are pretty stiff and sure they do a good job of triangulating the braces underneath. My Audi A4 'vert had the same setup....don't think you should run without.
