SMG II Retrofit?
Hi, I'm new. This isn't much of a good introduction, so I hope everyone forgives me. I've lurked for a long while reading about E90's and so on, never registered because I never felt like I had anything to offer, but something came up and I can't find any answers anywhere (google, or searching). Maybe I won't here, either, but it's worth a shot.
I tried to but it didn't have any results at all, so I hope this isn't a repost. I don't mind the transmission at all, I think it's a thrilling ride and an awesome car, but the truth is at the same time I've got a bit of a compulsion about modding things, and this is far outside my experience...or the experience of anyone else I know. Has anyone here attempted--or even heard of anyone attempting--an SMG II retrofit on a Z4 M? My thought was that the SMG II was made for this powerplant on the M3, so it might be painless? Maybe? ...Maybe?... Well maybe it's impossible (within reason) and maybe it's so obvious people just don't talk about it but the idea really has my curiosity peaked and I would really like to know what everyone has to say (if anything). Thanks in advance, if this post is idiotic just let me know. I can take it. Anyway, thanks, I love the boards. |

I don't think it is possible at this time. I know that you can retrofit an SMG steering wheel with paddleshifters onto 2003-05 steptronic Z4s, but haven't heard anything for //M's.

I was thinking about yanking the whole trans. I know it'd be the price of the replacement, but outside of that I am having trouble finding information on what else would be involved.
Maybe I'm a pioneer. |

If you wanted to do it...you'd likely have to replace the ENTIRE drive train to make it fit. Nothing is impossible...just depends on how much money you're willing to throw at it.

Everything is possible. Just how much money are you willing to spend? A friend of mine retrofitted SMG2 on his E46 330 and it cost him like $12K USD. He's put more than $150K into modding his 330.
For the Z4M, it surely will cost a lot more than $12K since the drive-train might have to be built from the ground up.

Like GP20 said, the stock parts won't fit. You would need a custom drivetrain to do this, and then need to figure out how to retrofit all the electronics (doesn't the SMG have it's own ECU?), etc.

$150k Well, thanks guys. I know nothing's impossible if you're willing to dish the dollars, but I think having all the hardware built from the ground up would go beyond "just having fun" for something not needed. That'd sure explain why I never saw anything anywhere!
Thanks and happy 4th. Everyone be safe. |

I'm either fearless or ADD. Yanking and replacing seemed okay (I actually got inspired watching MITE46's rebuild of an E30, figured the chassis sizes were similar...though I haven't measured against my E30...I should!) but...yanking and custom building seems a little extreme even for me.
Happy 4th! |

Well he also has a Racing Dynamic (the real Racing Dynamic, not the fake one in the U.S.) 645 coupe, a Mini Cooper S, and a Ferrari 612. The 330ci is his project car.
