Making my 1 very practical...
I am going to be moving this year, and I like camping so I decided I need more room. I ended up deciding to keep my 128i, and I found used oem roof rack rails, and I found a good deal on a narrow cargo box (24" wide) that holds 13 cuft. I also ordered a pair of bike racks. I should have enough room in the cargo box for all my camping gear, and I can just leave it in the box when it is off my car, and if my plan works I will also be able to put both bikes on the roof at the same time leaving the trunk for a cooler, and dog stuff, and the back seat for the dog...Who need an SUV!!!!
Plus when I move I will be able to save a lot of space in the shipping crate I will be using by putting the bikes on the rack, and other light stuff in the box.

make sure you pad the area around the roof rail mounts with vinyl or masking tape t prevent any scratches from the roof rack mount points.

The oem ones mount to the nuts that are under the little plastic flaps on the roof. All the parts that touch the car are under that flap. The big plastic piece sits about a 1/2" from the roof so it won't scratch. It is actually a very well designed system. It also sits up high enough that all the mounting brackets, and straps will be easy to install. There is about 4" between the bottom of the rails, and the roof.

Utility trailer? IIRC you should be able to tow 1,000 lbs.

I thought about a trailer, but then I would have to store it somewhere, and I don't have room for a trailer. All I need to store the roof top box is two 24" brackets attached to the wall of my garage at the same spacing as the rack on my car, that way I can secure the box to the brackets when it is off my car.

Cool. Look forward to seeing a practical 1-Series around town. I've got my 135i for fun, and an Audi S4 Avant decked out with Rally Armour mud flaps, bike rack and roof box as my practical highway hauler.
Cheers, Bryan

Once my bike mounts show up I will be loading it all up, and I will post some pics.
You won't see my car around town with the rack and stuff on. I will only be putting that on when I am going to go camping. I hate seeing all the cars that have the carriers on the roof rack year round. That kills your gas mileage.

I got the rails, and roof top box, it fits great, and there should still be enough room for the bikes, but I haven't had it all on at the same time yet. I will post a pic once I have it all on, but I think it will be a couple of weeks until I have a chance to get it all on.

I'm definitely interested in the pics. I want to go camping in my 1 this summer.
