BMW Performance Exhaust (What's it come with...confused)
Hey,
New to this forum. Just bought a 2013 135i last April and want the BMW Performance Exhaust. I'm looking at this product code, 18102208806, but I'm confused as to what comes in the box. My local dealership says no cutting is required and it's just a bolt on, however, if it comes with the y-pipe, it does require cutting. 128i doesn't come with the y-pipe and doesn't require cutting, however, mine is the 135i. http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2165568/ Also, I've read on here that most actually prefer it without the y-pipe (droning on the highway, which I don't want). Even if it comes with it should I not install it? Wish I knew what it sounded like. Do M3's have this exhaust already installed (ie. with the y-pipe, no resonators and the perf exhuast)? This is resonator and muffler I'm talking about: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692258 Thanks Rob |

128's require cutting and clamping. You're best bet is to get the 135i performance exhaust and sell the Y pipe and keep the performance muffler. I'm sure you can find somebody to buy the Y pipe, i've seen them sell several times in the classifieds section.

the fact that we can eliminate the resonator with a 135 exhaust is huge |

The 135 exhaust has an axle-back portion that is flanged (read: bolted) to the y-pipe (with or without resonator). If you want to only install the axle back portion and keep the stock resonated Y-pipe, there is no cutting required. Does the 128 not have this flanged connection?

The 128i exhaust is welded from front to back.

And did you try it with and without the y-pipe? I'm concerned about the drone, but I know I want the BMW PE, but at the same time, don't wanna sell it because I would always be wondering what it would sound like WITH the y-pipe LOL Rob |

Install the whole exhaust, mine doesn't drone at all. This exhaust is still made by BMW and very conservative for a non-stock exhaust. sounds amazing too

Unfortunately, I'm not sure of the part number and I've thrown the box away. However, on doing some crosschecking, it looks like that is the correct part number for a 135 N55 PE (via realoem.com). I also just had the shop install the entire system, including y-pipe. Not sure if you're DCT or 6MT, but I have no issues with drone while at highway speeds in 7th gear. When under load at about 3k rpm, there is some SLIGHT drone but nothing that would be unbearable for me. The exhaust is still new (~100 mi driven), however, and I imagine the sound will change over the next several hundred miles. IMO, I'd install the y-pipe... Zach

Have the full PE on my 13 135i. The only time I get any kind of drone is if I am driving along at 90 or so in 6th (MT), which honestly is too high a gear, a quick change to 5th and it goes away. I think of it as a too high a gear warning system.

When I put the Performance Exhaust on my 135i last year, I started by just installing the muffler, because I didn't have a pipe cutter. Frankly, the difference in exhaust note was disappointing. I picked up a pipe cutter and installed the Y pipe a week later - and that made a HUGE difference in sound. I don't have any issues with droning.

I have a 6MT. Awesome, thanks for the feedback. Good enough for me. Y-pipe will be installed
Anyone know if this kinda install if I do it myself will void my warranty? In other words, do I have to trust the dealership mechanics to do this? |

For the 128i you will need to cut the rear muffler to install a PE. Bellow is @MikeinAlexandria great DIY....
DIY: BMW Performance Exhaust on 128i cabrio http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=450937 For the 135i you need to cut off the resonator off of the mid pipes, to install the PE's y-pipe. There is no drone with the entire PE system installed. What makes the PE so nice is at part throttle it sounds good but not ricey or raspy. And at WOT(wide open throttle) it sounds, well just amazing!!! You can look thru this thread of mine... I always wanted a PE but I did not want to spend that much money on an exhaust. So I "thought" by installing N55 mids that would be my "poor mans" PE. I did not like it. Plus removing the secondary cats seemed to loose a little bit of Tq on the low end. So I bought a PE and reinstalled my old N54 mids - I also used the PE's y-pipe. I am VERY happy with my PE. Really a nice exhaust. And the more miles you put on it... the more mellow the sound becomes! DIY installing N55 mid pipes on a N54... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=797160&page=5 Quote:
The biggest issue is IF your old studs snap off/break when removing the mid pipes. Thats what happened to me and since I did not have an acetylene torch I let my dealer fix the broken dp downpipe studs and do the PE install.

Mine is definitely more burbly now after quite a few months. Love the sound every morning when I fire her up. Did the install myself, and have to admit, not the easiest project I've undertaken. Cutting the pipe even with the pipe cutting tool was a pita. Came out great but in hindsight might've been better off just paying someone with better access. Whether you diy or pay someone to do it, you'll love it!

Dealer email today says they have 20% off the rest of the month on performance parts. Choices: PPK1 or PE? What a tough choice. Can't go wrong either way.
