Affect of OEM resonator in midpipe?
Hi all,
My car is a 2011 135i coupe with DCT and it's currently all stock with just the Berk Sport axelback. I like the sound but wish it was a little louder. I know Berk resonated midpipes would be great but that's another $550 plus installation cost. Would simply cutting out the OEM resonator in the N55 midpipe give me a little more sound? How much do you think it would increase the volume? Would drone be bad or the exhaust note be bad with it gone? Thanks in advance for the insight... |

I have a new Y-pipe from the BMW PE for sale. It is a resonator delete kit basically.
sale link: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=903147 I didn't install it because I think it will make the exhaust louder than I'd like. I also believe there will be less drone with a resonator. Do I have any scientific evidence? No, I've just read a lot of exhaust reviews on this forum

If you have any plans on doing a down pipe I would start there as that really changes the sound.

From personal experience, leave the resonator in and get a DP. We have the same exact car and with the DP volume will go up atleast 35% AND the resonator will give you a nice deep aggressive tone

Thanks guys -- really appreciate the help. I don't plan to get a downpipe due to cost, I'm still under factory warranty, and I don't like messing with emissions/smog related stuff. So the Berk axelback and possibly the resonator delete would be it.

I literally just did this yesterday for the same reason. I do like the sound more it got slightly louder but deeper more throaty and has some of those pops when down reving. I like it quite a bit more
I will say though there is slight drone from 1900-2300 rpm at 3/4 throttle in 5th and 6th gear (I'm stick) but on the freeway with cruise on I get 0 drone whatsoever I have the active autowerke gen 2 exhaust so that might make a slight difference. Also I did a few pulls with my buddy and his z32 300zx and he said that when I passed him that the exhaust was so loud that he couldn't hear his own car anymore ( his car is the most droney car I have heard in my life and it's a nightmare to drive distance on the freeway) even though it's fairly quiet in cabin he said its a whole new monster outside the car so just food for thought. I'm very happy with my delete I paid a guy who does all custom work to build a Y pipe and cut the resonator out he charged my 70 bucks. He builders all kinds of custom headers and turbo manifolds for race cars up here in nor cal and said that the mid pipes are fine unless your pushing major power they are just under 2.5 inches and are Mandral bent so don't worry about changing them out unless your putting down a lot more power doing DP and whatnot no sense in paying 500 for nothing. Hope this helps |

SacBeemerGuy,
Thanks so much for your input! Really appreciate it. The res delete y-pipe I was gonna buy sold before I could get it...so thinking of having a local exhaust shop fabricate one just like you did. $70 is a steal! I'd be happy with $150 around Orange County. Anyway, thanks again. |

I heard the berk with stock DP and it droned and whistled I didn't like it.... Honestly a little spool noise is cool and sounds good but I don't drive a diesel hahaha I never thought I'd own a turbo car I like naturally aspirated more... More authentic IMO but to each his own these cars are a blast to drive and I love hearing mine when my foot gets heavy!
