Spoiler torn, easy fix??

I noticed a rip in the "cardboard" stuff under my front spoiler. It looks like the clip where it fastens is torn off somehow.

How much will the dealer charge to replace this? I'm assuming this isn't under warranty

Any ideas?

Honestly I wouldn't go to dealer. I had both sides and the center pieces replaced at my body shop one time and his cost was still expensive. Don't remember exact pricing but dealer will rip you off. Not to mention mine are getting torn apart again.

Just the paper stuff you had done, right? None of the plastic parts are ripped on mine. How much did it run?

I bought one side for like $30. They raised the price to about $60 I believe. There's a left, center and right piece if I remember right.

I made a long post about how to repair. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures... A picture would have been worth 1000 words.

You only need to drill the clearance holes through the aluminum patch/strips if they go right where the clips/nuts are.

this is perfect info, thanks for sharing. I called the dealer and they wanted $250 and $150 for the 2 parts I need. The site has them for $103 and $26. I guess I'll order them from the site

The two side pieces are $68 each from Tischer. the middle part is around $140 if I remember correctly. Just get the parts and get a body shop to do the work. The dealer will charge at least 1.5h labor to do this. My body shop charged me around $50 labor plus parts.

Lucky you though, the parts here in Canada are $103 each for the side pods and $244 for the centerpiece. I'm trying to justify a trip down to Niagara Falls to go pick up the parts if I order them from Tischer.

If you can turn a screw and have minimal mechanical skills, you can replace those panels yourself.

Yup, exactly. The only slightly non-intuitive part is the supporting cables which must be turned to "unlock" and disassemble. Clever design - it allows upwards force and deflection without breaking anything. That being said these parts are still insanely fragile to any contact...

Kind of makes you wonder why BMW bothered with the felt stuff. I figure Polyurethane is just as light (or insignificantly heavier) with much better durability.

The supporting cables only come into play if you replace the center panel (which you probably know).

I believe these parts were designed to make noise / break etc. to help avoid damage to other more important (and expensive) parts above them. If they were too strong then they would transfer the force to the bumper for example. I would rather that these broke than the bumper.

If you have the most basic tools, you can change that out in no time at all. To hell with dealership prices on part, yet alone their labor.

While these lower trim pieces have a few functions, they are also part of the EMI shielding so that the car doesn't fail for radiated radio frequency garbage in tests which are required to certify a car to various gov't standards. (EMI= ElectroMagnetic Interference)
The felt is impregnated with conductive material to make them a radio frequency shield. There are certainly more durable compounds for this purpose, but they also wanted these panels to be quite flexible. In some cases the need is to keep external interference from getting _into_ the car's electronics (as opposed to keeping internally generated noise from getting out).

Been involved with this stuff a bit and was at Metlabs Santa Clara for the testing of the Tesla Model S.

Wow, never would have figured that in a million years. Very interesting. The depth modern manufacturers have to go to is often amazing...
