Not sure what you mean by you tried it but if you have it on, the car will shut off when you come to a stop and restart as soon as you take your foot off the brake.

If the button is lit it means it's disabled and the car will not auto shut off/on upon idling. It should be lit by default so you'd have to push the button in order to get it to be enabled.

Take a looks here -

I believe it started coming standard on 2011 +.

Added in 2011.5. It's part of the Efficient Dynamics bullshit.

I tracked my gas mileage over a few tanks with it on versus off. It was less than 1mpg, which is effectively 0.

That's what I thought. My wife has it on her X3 but I can't imagine it would feel good on a V8 M3.

It was done for emissions purposes.

It's uselss. It won't even work if your car is running air while it's warm outside. Basically it doesn't take much for the auxiliary power to be overtaxed in stop and go, and in these situations, the motor will just remain on.

The worst part is that the S65 does not like to turn over as quickly as more modern engines do. Even a 991 engine turns over very quickly the second you think about letting off that gas pedal.

I tried it once and got annoyed with the starting/stopping.

I was in traffic next to a guy in am M6 that had his on- that was annoying to hear him start/stop 20 times in 15 min

At least with the M3 it defaults to the off position. Every other BMW with this feature defaults to the on position and then you have to select it off. My time with an F30 loaner proved extremely frustrating as I kept forgetting to disable it.

Actually, I don't think it works that badly, particularly if you have DCT. It restarts as soon as you take your foot off the brake, so you can anticipate changing lights. That said, in actual operation, it is pretty useless, particularly if you have a shorter commute. It won't operate either below 37 or above ~80, meaning in Chicago, you can only use it about 4 months out of the year, at least driving during normal commute times. It also did nothing to reduce the gas guzzler tax. I did use mine pretty regularly, but after the bearing wear scare, I figured the value in gas savings wasn't worth the extra wear.

I guess we agree that it's a pretty useless option to have. But I'm telling you. Sometimes in city traffic you need extremely quick response in order to drive efficiently and this crank just does not turn over quickly. I guess we have different standards for the word "quick".

Ditto. I would have deleted it in my order if it was possible.

I've attempted to use this many times under the conditions stated in the manual and I can't get it to work. We have several lights in my area that are super long. I'd like to know that it at least works so I can get it looked at before the warrenty is off. Could this be an indication that the battery may be weak and not up to complete charge. I've even tried to use it after a long highway drive without results. Any suggestions to get it to work?

Is your air conditioning on? Are you trying it within ~30 degrees F and ~80 degrees F?
